About the Community

The hamlet of Los Pérez, located within the jurisdiction of the village of Tizubín in San Jacinto, Chiquimula, sits in an area of irregular topography with the dry, hot climate characteristic of eastern Honduras. With a population of 105, its economy is based on agriculture, centered on the cultivation of staple grains for self-consumption and local sale, supplemented by raising backyard livestock. In terms of education, the hamlet relies on the local school infrastructure, which has been the subject of efforts to improve its physical conditions, seeking to provide a dignified and safe environment for the children. It has one primary school. Community health is addressed through basic sanitation strategies, with an emphasis on the distribution of water filtration systems to ensure safe drinking water in homes. Residents must travel to the health post in the center of the village of Tizubín, which is located approximately thirty minutes away by vehicle and two hours on foot via shortcuts. Mobility is limited by the nature of its access roads, which consist of dirt tracks connecting to the main road network in Tizubín and from there to the municipal seat. Four-wheel drive vehicles are the most reliable means of transportation during the winter. The development of the hamlet is focused on reducing the gap in basic services and improving the resilience of its infrastructure to prolonged periods of drought.
